Children's Books

Many people believe that it is easy to write a child's book. I mean, how hard can it really be? Write a few words, through in a moral or two, and put in some cute drawings.

This is not quite true however. There are millions of children's books out there, and only a few that are destined to become classics. The reason they stand the test of time is because they not only appeal to what children love, but the books tell a story (whether that is funny, moralistic, timeless, or just plain silly) that stays with the child throughout their whole lives.

The following books may someday get there, but for now, these are just some that I have read and will give my humble opinion on.

Desert Tortoise playing in the water surrounded by a rabbit, puppy, 2 birds and a gecko

Bubby's Puddle Pond

By: Carol Hageman

Illustrated By: Nathaniel P. Jensen

Publication Date: 24 October 2017

This is a beautifully illustrated book! The pictures tell the story almost as well as the author does! It is a cute book about going somewhere new, meeting new friends, having new obstacles, and also about the life cycle (i.e. hibernation) of the desert tortoise. The only issue is that the story jumps rapidly from Bubby entering his new environment, meeting a wren and a bunny, hybernating, waking up and going through life all over again. It is a bit jarring without the needed transition between events. The transition does not need to be long, but it does need a bit more to make it a smoother read. The resource guide at the end is fantastic! It gives background information about desert tortoises that could be shared prior to the story to help children understand why Bubby does what he does plus helpful questions and activities to do.
